20% smaller size than the Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter and soon earned the
Sopwith Admiralty Type 9901 and the "Pup" nickname
Its brilliant performance made it one of the favorites among the British air force legends, even if only relatively few (1,170) were built. It was powered with the popular 80 HP Le Rhone rotary engine that gave it a 180 kph (112 mph) top speed and a maximum flight time of 3 hours. A Sopwith Pup, flown by Commander E.H. Dunning, made history on August 2, 1917 by completing the first ever landing at sea on the deck of the HMS Furious aircraft carrier.
