Thunder Tiger introduces one of their RTR's to date. Transferred to Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron 5 in September 1942, she came under command of Lieutenant John F. Kennedy.

Active throughout the Solomon's campaign, on the night of August 1-2, 1943, PT-109 was one of fifteen PT boats patrolling the Blackett Strait south of Kolombangara Island. At about 0230, PT-109 was cut in half by the Amagiri, a Fubuki-class destroyer under Commander Hanami, and sank in about 8°03S, 156°58E. Although the PT-109 was sunk, Kennedy was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for his bravery during the rescue of his crew.
