Links on Hovercrafts

The Hovercraft model is supported on an air cushion.  As such there is ideally no contact with any surface over which it travels; and all maneuvers, turns and direction change have to be accomplished by the coordinated use of the throttle and rudder.  The unique nature of hovercraft flight lends itself to exciting contests and races.  The hovercraft model is a powerful device. You must treat it with caution

These expertly designed RC model hovercrafts have a load weight of over 20 to 25 lbs including battery weight

A Hovercraft is a vehicle that travels over land or water on a cushion of pressurized air. Air is forced under the hull of the craft and is contained by a tube or "skirt" of flexible material.  A pocket or "plenum" of air is formed and the resulting pressure pushes the hull of the hovercraft up and away from the surface it is sitting on. Because the friction against the bottom of the craft has been greatly reduced, less energy is required to move it over the surface. This scientific principle is known as "surface effect". The air cushion also gives you smoother ride over rough surfaces. - The Radio Controlled Hovercrafts listed on this page are scale models of real hovercrafts used today not just toys.

Modeled in scale to actual Hovercrafts these function just like the real ones  - traveling over land, water, snow, and ice - the models represent the hovercrafts used today by the military, government search and rescue and public transportation.

Suggested Use for Hovercraft Modeler Clubs

Contest & Competitions: The unique nature of the hovercraft flight lends itself to exciting contest and races. The following suggestions can make you and your friends hover-nauticaling even more exciting

Slalom Courses: A Slalom course can be set up on any flat area such as parking lots, garages, driveways, etc. Coffee cans, boxes, and other suitable markers can be arranged in small or large patterns.  Each contestant then runs the course and is timed from start to finish.  The shortest time wins.  Your slalom course can be enhanced by installing jump ramps made from pieces of plywood

Races: A race course can be set up in minutes as described above in the slalom race. This time, however, 2 or more hovercraft models are competing against each other.  You will find that your driving skill will be more critical than brute force speed

Speed Traps:  Model hovercraft can be run against the clock.  A speed trap scan be set up (100 ft, 200 ft. etc.) on any suitable surface.  Runs are made in both directions and the average timed speed over the round trip is computed.  The shortest time wins.
